July is the big one in Kasson. The whole month builds toward Minnesota’s oldest county fair, the Fourth of July lands on a Saturday this year — and it’s America’s 250th birthday — and the pool, the parks, and the ballfields are humming from morning until the fireflies come out.
Whether you live here or you’re just passing through Dodge County, here’s a full month of small-town summer fun. Grab some lemonade and let’s go.
Dodge County Free Fair
It doesn’t get more small-town summer than this. First held in 1858, the Dodge County Free Fair is the oldest county fair in Minnesota — and true to its name, admission and parking are free. Expect grandstand nights with the demolition derby and stock car and trailer races, the Midwest Rides carnival and midway, 4-H and open-class exhibits, prize-winning pies and hotdish, live music at the Township Square stage, a beer garden, and enough fair food to keep you coming back all week. The fair traditionally runs Wednesday through Sunday in mid-July (it ran July 16–20 in 2025, with 2026 expected in the same window, around July 15–19). Fourth of July — America Turns 250
This Independence Day is a big one: the country turns 250. The Fourth falls on a Saturday in 2026, so make a day of it — fire up the grill, spend the afternoon cooling off at the Aquatic Center, and deck Main Street in red, white, and blue. Kasson’s own celebration with a parade and fireworks (KaSonFest) comes in August, so for a fireworks show on the Fourth itself, the closest option is in Rochester (about 20 minutes east): the city’s free display lights up Soldiers Field at 10 p.m., with the Rochester Community Band playing a holiday concert at Cascade Lake Park beforehand.

Want a say in how your town runs? The Kasson City Council meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month — July 8 and July 22 — at City Hall, 401 5th St SE. Just up the road in historic Mantorville, the Mantorville Theatre Company puts on its beloved summer melodramas inside the 19th-century Opera House — the kind of show where you cheer the hero and boo the villain out loud. It’s family-friendly, refreshingly affordable ($10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors), and a true Dodge County summer tradition. Performances run on weekends through July. Cool Off at the Kasson Aquatic Center
Kasson’s solar-powered outdoor pool is summer headquarters for local families. There’s a zero-depth entry activity pool and toddler area for the little ones, plus two water slides, high and low diving boards, a rock-climbing wall, lounge chairs, and a concession stand for everyone else. Set up an account online for daily admission, swim lessons, or a season pass; cash is also accepted at the gate.

Kasson keeps six city parks, so there’s always a shady shelter or a ball game within reach. North Park is the flagship — home to the Aquatic Center, ball fields, tennis and sand-volleyball courts, picnic shelters, and a big playground — while Veterans Memorial Park and neighborhood spots like Lion’s Park round out the options. Kasson punches above its weight at mealtime. Start the day with home cooking, fresh pie, and cinnamon rolls at Tammy’s Place; cool down with a cone from Clem’s Cups & Cones; raise a glass at Chaotic Good Brewing Company; or branch out with sushi at Haku Asian or Mexican at El Patron. Visitors are always welcome at Kasson’s churches. First Presbyterian (Sunday worship at 10 a.m.), St. John’s Lutheran, First Baptist, and the Zion parish all gather through the summer, and several host a Vacation Bible School — a week of games, music, and crafts for kids — during the summer months. Take a slow walk down Main Street. Kasson has five sites on the National Register of Historic Places and deep Prairie School roots — including a downtown building designed by the celebrated firm Purcell & Elmslie — and the city’s historic water tower on 4th Avenue still stands watch over town. Browse the local shops, snap a few photos, and soak up the kind of small-town charm that’s getting harder to find.
Take in a Rochester Honkers Game

Save the date: KaSonFest in August
Kasson’s own hometown bash returns the second weekend in August at North Park — a community celebration since 1991 with a parade, fireworks, the Kasson Ambassador ceremony, a bellyflop contest, an eating contest, and live music.
